Summer vacation - Hip Kit Club Guest Designer

I’m excited to be sharing my second project created with the June Hip Kits. School ended June 19th and the weather hasn’t been that great so I found some more pictures from last summer. In contrast to many scrappers I am not so into the documentation part of scrapbooking (it might come as a surprise a I am actually a historian…..). The kids would love for me to do PL, but I can’t force myself to scrap the bad photos that would come of it, so I just find pictures that I like the colors of and that are fun, like these from a trip to the beach last year.

Then I added papers in the same colors from the June main kit with embellishments from the June Embellishment kit. Sometimes I need to find new ways of layering the papers and pics. I really don’t like everything to be straight/linear/square and that is also why I always add color underneath my layers.

Hip Kit Club Guest Designer

I am so excited to share with you some projects I have made with the amazing Hip Kit Club June kits.

I want to share with you first how I create my signature style - which is drops of watercolor layered with stamping (and stenciling) (Excuse the poor picture quality I only had my Iphone available. ) To create the (effect of) watercolor background I start with white cardstock and prep it with clear gesso. The clear gesso is doesn’t give you a yellow tint like regular white gesso and the colors doesn’t run off the page like it often does with the white gesso.. You can switch it out with matte medium, but the clear gesso will be a little matter and have a rougher texture and can handle watery colors better. When the gesso has dried (I actually let the cardstock air dry to keep it as flat as possible as the heat can bend the paper more) I start adding the color. For this background I have used Ecoline which is a liquid watercolor and a big brush to drop the first layers of colors. I let it dry a little and then add more drops and let the colors mix, and adding more and more drops. In addition to the Ecoline I have used mists from several different manufacturers (the Heidi Swapp mist however does not work well with other mists to create the watercolor effect), and as a top layer I added drops of Izink pigment ink. Next step is adding stamps, and I used the Avery Elle Raspberry and Daisy Pigment Ink Pads from the June Color Kit, you can see the rich colors in the pads here.

For the final step I used the Orange Ranger Embossing Powder. Unfortunately I ended up covering most of the embossing…. I don’t always have plans with my backgrounds, I mostly play with the colors.

Here is the final background before adding the papers.

As much as I like making backgrounds I love to layer. I usually don’t use as much paper as I do here, but when the top paper is pretty toned down I can do it and still feel that my photo is the focal point.

I have mixed the June main kit with embellishments from the June 2015 Embellishment kit.

Thank you for joining me today for my first project, I hope you will come back and see the rest of my projects
